Led Zeppelin-a-Day: "When the Levee Breaks"

"When the Levee Breaks", Led Zeppelin IV
Oh yes, lust and admiration in epic proportions. Somehow they turned a blues number into an enchanting and spellbinding masterpiece. Of all the magnificence occurring - namely the thunderous drumming, wailing harmonica, and rollicking guitars - what is most noteworthy is its delivery. By which I mean, PRODUCTION! Quite literally exciting. I have gotten really giddy and forced people to listen to "When the Levee Breaks" on headphones more than once. Because "When the Levee Breaks" should only be listened to on headphones. Oh, the whole sound is incredibly thick and moody, its remarkable. Completely creating its own mood. You've got phasing, backwards echo, yadda yadda... The BEST part is at the end (you might not even notice until you're listening on headphones -- goooo! I urge you!) when the music begins spiraling around you. Mesmerizingly, it swirls and twirls, panning around the stationary vocals. Its totally intoxicating. Music can be inspiring, moving, beautiful, annoying... But how often is it literally FUN? Listening to that bit on headphones is literally exciting. "Weeeee, here it goes." Hypnotic whirls. Its kind like, when you're about to go to sleep, and it feels as if the bed is floating and calmly spinning? I know this happens to other people, because I've discussed it with others! Its the musical equivalent of that. But like, way better.
