Calvin and Hobbes' Snowmen

If there was ever someone who could make you see humor in even the snowiest, most inconvenient of winters, it was cartoonist Bill Watterson. His strip Calvin and Hobbes was great for many reasons, but his series of snowman themed comics always made me laugh....

Shakespeare In Love

I came across Shakespeare In Love the other day on television and I could not believe it has been almost a dozen years since its release. I watched it because, despite the fact I own the DVD, it had been forever since I enjoyed it. I remembered immediately why I love this movie...
Beyond the incredible costumes, sets, score, and cinematography, there is wonderful wit accompanied by downright silly humor and heart-wrenching romance.

There are really two loves involved in this film- the connection between the character William Shakespeare and his muse, Viola de Lesseps, and the love of art, of the creative process. We watch both relationships unfold and flourish throughout the film (and get the better part of a fantastic performance of Romeo and Juliet to boot). I know there was a lot of controversy surrounding this film's Oscar win, in fact I found it on numerous "least deserved" lists. That is such a shame. There were some incredible movies competing in 1998, but I still think Shakespeare in Love was deserving- a near perfect combination of humor, passion, all aspects of the arts and...love.

Regretsy

We at Hiving Out are what you may call Etsy-obsessed. We don't know how we shopped, decorated our homes, or gave each other gifts before its existence. And we love the fact that it has not only introduced us to so many amazingly talented artists and artisans, but that it's such a great and supportive forum for those same artists to build a community, support one another, and get the attention they deserve.

That being said, we also love Etsy because without it there would be no Regretsy.

Want a scarf made out of the hair your pet sheds? Or, perhaps, seeds to a money tree? Or maybe some woolen eyeglasses to keep the area around your eyes warm? Seems as if Regretsy has 'em all! There are all sorts of real (but slightly goofy) Etsy crafts culled for your amusement.

The State

Is anyone else super excited that "The State" is finally coming out on DVD tomorrow? It's been over 10 years (almost 15, I think!) since I've seen it last (I'm thankful for the few youtube videos out there though) and I'll be so happy to hear Michael Showalter say, once again, "I'm Doug and I'm outta heeeerrre." Tomorrow will be such a wonderful day for 90s nostalgia!
And, if you haven't seen it yet, you must watch "Horrible People," a hilarious web comedy series that is not only very State-like, but has the adorable Joe Lo Truglio in it as well (check out his childhood shark drawings/obsession here). Plus, of course, it stars Kristen Schaal. And all things Kristen are divine.
