thinking about gardens and poems
My mother is visiting next month and part of the reason I am so excited for her stay (aside from all the mending and re-sewing of buttons that I have planned for her to do) is that she is going to help me set up my first ever garden. Therefore in preparation, I am reveling in these gorgeous watercolors by Jinn 'n Tonic and reading this book by the poet Stanley Kunitz. Yeah, I know, I probably should be reading up on soil and pest control, but all in due time. Right now I'm just loving this...
from "never trying to explain"
by Stanley Kunitz
"Thinking of a new season in the garden feels different from imagining a new poem. The garden has achieved its form; it doesn't have to be new each year. What it has to do is grow. You're not going to uproot the entire garden and start all over. The poem is always a new creation and aspires to a transcendence that is beyond telling at the moment when you're working on it. You know you are moving into an area you've never explored before and there is a great difference."
(published in Kunitz's last work, "The Wild Braid: A Poet Reflects on a Century in the Garden")

Thursday, a Hiving Birthday, and Etsy

Earlier this week, Lorelei, our fellow Hiving Out blogger, celebrated the big 35. And though I have yet to mail her birthday package (no worries though - she's used to my presents getting "lost in the mail" and taking a week longer to arrive), I think I did okay - thanks to the land o' plenty that is Etsy. After 20 odd years of exchanging gifts, I am mighty thankful for all the lovely things that I imagine Lorelei being happy to receive...
LL loves beautiful watercolor art and I bet she'd be thrilled to own any of these:
Or something to add to her children's book collection (to keep high up and away from her little ones) :

Or maybe some delicate pieces to help fill that cabinet I know she really, really wants (if her husband is reading this then I hope you are picking up on the fact that it's YOU that I'm nudging):
And because LL's favorite color is green and every girl loves pretty things to wear:

Blueberries
studiotuesday is an Etsy shop that has a cool selection of watercolor works. I am a big fan of the medium, so I tend to browse the shops of watercolor artists. One of the many things I like about studiotuesday is that there is a variety of pieces- some, as they noted, are like pages of a Naturalist's sketchbook or object studies-

Shells and Sea glass

Fishing Bobbers

5 Acorns
And then there is a great series of whimsical, beautiful whale prints that I love for a child's room or playroom. Here are a few from the set-
Whale Series- Spouts

Whale Series- Hot Air Balloon Festival

Whale Series- Tails
Whale Series- Lighthouse print
One shop that really illustrates the range in watercolor artistry- definitely worth a peek!
